The College Management along with the Placement Team and Teaching Faculty had conducted a seminar on “Mental Health & Stress Management” in the College Conference Hall on Monday, April 15, 2024. Around 85 students had attended the seminar.
TOPICS DISCUSSED DURING THE SEMINAR: -
MENTAL HEALTH:
- State of mental well being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life
- Basic human right
- Crucial to personal, community and socio-economic development
- More than the absence of mental disorders
DETERMINANTS OF MENTAL HEALTH:
- Multiple individual, social and structural determinants
- Individual psychological and biological factors- emotional skills, substance use and genetics
- Exposure to poverty, violence, inequality and environmental deprivation
- Time frame- sensitive periods like early childhood
- Protective factors- individual social and emotional skills, positive social interactions, quality education, decent work, safe neighbourhoods, community goodwill
MENTAL HEALTH PROMOTION AND PREVENTION:
- Identifying the determinants
- Intervene to reduce risks
- Build resilience and establish supportive environments
- Suicide prevention is a global priority, included in the SDG- Banning highly hazardous pesticides
- Promoting child and adolescent mental health
- Promoting and protecting mental health at work
MENTAL HEALTH CARE AND TREATMENT:
- Community based MHC (more acceptable than institutional care)
- Mental health care integrated with general health care
- Community mental health services with rehabilitation centres
- School health services and prisons

- Changes in one’s social life
- Exposure to new people, ideas and temptations

- Learn to accept change as a part of life: support system of family and friends
- Avoid activities that promise release from stress while actually adding to it- Alcohol, Smoking, Marijuana, Caffeine
Dr. Mrudul Shashikant Shinge, the guest speaker comes from Maharashtra. She has completed her MBBS from CMC Ludhiana and has done her MS(OG) from CMC Vellore. She had worked as a consultant in Padmac Hospital, Pune for eight years and presently working as a consultant in Metas Adventist Hospital, Surat. Her rich experience had enriched the college students with instructions and advice.
We thank the college administration for their kind advice and permission to conduct the above seminar which was beneficial for the students. Our sincere thanks to the guest speaker Dr. Mrudul Shashikant Shinge for sharing her knowledge and experience to our students. We also would like to thank the faculty and the volunteers who had helped in maintaining discipline among the audience during the seminar.
