Event Title: Adult Learning Theories & Principles – The Modern Perspective

(FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM)

Participants: 30 teaching staff of Commerce; Management & GNM.

Objective of the FDP:

After attending the workshop on Faculty Knowledge Sharing Program (FKSP) organized by ICFAI Business School (IBS) Ahmedabad in Hotel Orange International, Surat on July 22, 2022, Dr. Priya Narayana was given the platform of taking FDP session for the faculty of Management, Finance & GNM department.

The main focus was on andragogy (teaching the adults) where the instruction is based upon learner-cantered approach. The teacher acts as a facilitator to help the gap between students and knowledge. As stated by Kyle Freedman, the learner is viewed as an independent entity that enters the learning experience with a unique set of experiences and motivators.

Five characteristics of adult learners were highlighted:

1. Self-concept: Adults are self-directed. They are independent; they like to find their own way and can make their own decisions by managing their own learning.
2. Experience: Adults have breadth and depth of experiences to draw on and apply to new learning.
3. Readiness: Adults want to learn things that are relevant in a real-to-life contest.
4. Orientation: Adults are engaged by learning that is problem centred and practical.
5. Motivation: Adults are intrinsically motivated by various value-drivers.

The seven principles of Ault Learning and the approaches were also highlighted and explained.

Tips to engage adult learners:

MBT (maximum brain/butt/bladder tolerance): Depending on the time of day, MBT can be as short as 10-15 minutes and usually not longer than 45-50 minutes. Have you listened to a lecture with your brain going somewhere else? How does a trainer avoid brain fog? Think about the audience and do something different at 10- to 15-minute intervals. Vary your delivery to reflect the three learning styles.

Activity: Each teacher was given a piece of paper and was instructed to write his/her common problems faced while teaching and to crumble the paper and keep it on the desk. The teachers were then advised to form four groups and analyze the problems and come out with solutions.  The session was fruitful where the faculty got new insights of teaching the college students.
